Let me add a little, hearsay knowledge to it, most of which I received from my father, Michael McMenemy, who was the son of the original Michael and my aunt, Mary McMenemy.

Although I heard references to the family living in South Shields, I never really understood the link. My memory is that a group of brothers left Ireland, possibly from what is now the border country between what is now Northern Ireland and Eire, sometime in the 19th. Century and that they moved to Consett which was an iron smelting town in County Durham and that the subsequently lived in Gateshead and Wallsend.

Of those brothers who came from Ireland some moved to Glasgow and some of their descendants became famous football players, playing for Celtic and Scotland. One of them came south and played for Newcastle United for a time and was nicknamed "Napoleon" as he was small and a little general on the field. The other places mentioned where they settled were Hull and, I think, London.

Some of those that settled in the Newcastle area were educated in the sense that they went as far as free Catholic education could take them, were accepted for the Grammar School but could not afford to go. They were also self-educated and my grandfather, Michael would sit the children down after supper and read to them the Classics. My father and aunt both mentioned, "The Count of Monte Christo" by Alexander Dumas, which believe it or not, may have been prohibited reading for Roman Catholics at that time. Mary, who was the second youngest in the family also fondly remembered her father taking her up to the top of Grey's Monument in Newcastle and telling her the history of Newcastle. He also took her to the opera , which was " advanced" thinking in those days.

He suffered from a lung infection of some sort and was a good, but stern, music teacher. He was very sick for several years and before that had worked as a timekeeper in one of the shipyards in Wallsend.

His son, Joseph went on to be educated by a respected violin teacher called John Dunne and played first violin for the London Symphony and was the Musical Director for Kent. His son, Michael, is a musician as were his brothers, Frankie and Wilfred.

Grandfather Michael died in the late 1930's. One child of his not mentioned in your reference is Tommy who died when he was 16 and another person not mentioned is Michael McKenty, who may have been the illegitimate child of Wilfred McMenemy and who lived with Rosie McMenemy and her husband all of their lives. Also, I thought that Harry McMenemy who is the son of Daniel Henry died as a soldier in service for in the British army, although I can find no reference for this. Malcolm McMenemy, my brother, died in September 2001 and Chris, my son, while studying at Cambridge, in 2000.

Maggie says "I think James came from Dublin, but that is unconfirmed. He married Mary Paterson they lived in Johnstone Scotland all their lives. He was a carter and delivered coal."

"They raised eight children in Johnstone, most of them emigrating to the U.S.A. during the 1920's."

"Some still remain in Johnstone."

Update: I have received and email regarding Duncan Ferguson, who was born in 1936 in Bonnybridge. It would appear that he is related to the Bellingham/McMenemy family.

During the 1901 census at Barleyhill in Bonnybridge. Mary McMenemy, aged one, was visiting the house as grand daughter of David Bellingham and Martha McHugh. Mary's parents were Patrick McMenemy and Elizabeth Maitland Bellingham.

David Bellingham's (born Ireland around 1839/1841) parents were Dawson Bellingham and Sarah Montgomery. Martha McHugh, born 1842 in Culmore, Antrim. Her parents were Arthur McHugh and Mary Bellingham. Duncan Ferguson's Great Grandmother was Mary Bellingham who was born in Camelon, Falkirk in 1866. Mary Bellingham was the daughter of David Bellingham and Martha McHugh.

Cleone Barrus is also doing research on a McMenemy line, and writes:

"Mine went from Ireland to Glasgow in the mid 1830's as near as I can tell and then on to the US in 1870's. My grandmother was a daughter to James McMenamy and Margaret Jaap Jamieson (who was Scottish). James father was William McMenemy and I do not have his mother's name. I have William's death registration from Scotland. But I have been collecting every McMenemy I could find in the 1840-1870 period."

Billy McMenamy relates the following family legend:

"I am trying to verify a story my father told long before he passed away. The story goes, there were four (4) McMenamy (or however it may have been spelled) brothers who were Knights for Mary, Queen of Scots. For some unknown (to me at least) reason they switched their allegiance from the Queen to her opposition. For this the story goes, she put such a price on their heads they had to leave Scotland and purportedly came to America in the early 1600s.

I recently met a cousin who spells his name McMennamy, who told me the same story."

Jeff LeFaucheur provides the following background to his family in Australia

"My grandmother was a McMenemy - Bridget McMenemy born in Rutherglen, Scotland. She was the daughter of James McMenemy of King Street and Ellen (nee Gilmour) who was married in Lanarkshire, Scotland (date of marriage unknown). James McMenemy's widow (Ellen) then married S/Sgt. Moule ex British Army in Calcutta.

They had four daughters and two sons - Margaret, Bridget, Benny, Paddy (drowned in a pond in Calcutta, India), Nora,Catherine and Neille. Two of Mum's uncles were famous Celtic Soccer players (one was named - James). Margaret (Maggie) m Bagot. Bridget (born 18 March 1893 and died in London March 1970). m Magnus Wayne. Bridget's family then moved to India during the British Raj and had strong links with the Black Watch.

The McMenemy's born in India were
    Nora m Hughey,
    Nellie ,
    Catherine (Kathleen) m Tancred,
Phillip (Benny) m Miss Heffron ( or maybe Miss Heffner)
Patrick (died as a child - drowned in a pond)
    Violet (died in infancy)
    Mary (died in infancy).

Bridget had three children - Donald (dec), Thelma (dec) and Donald (living in Perth)

I love to hear from you as our family consisting of four generations of Australians is keen to know the McMenemy's genealogy."

Guy McMenemy provides the following:

"My Grandfather Robert E. McMenemy b.1840-d.1904 came to the USA with his brother (first name unkown) just prior to the Civil War. They left from Glasgow, Scotland and arrived at unkown port in USA. Robert's brother remained in the North."

"Robert moved south to Louisiana and served in the C.S.A., Co.E, 25 Regt., La. Inf. and was a prisoner of war at the end. He went from Louisiana to Texas after the Civil War and married Florence Hermes whose father Emil Hermes had migrated from Germany and served in the 4th Texas calvery during the Civil War. Robert and Florence settled in Beeville, Texas where he was the town's Blacksmith and raised a family of seven. My father was the first born, Robert E.J., b.1883 and the rest as follows: Albert C., Mary A., Philena, Fred L., b 1889, Harry L., and Lela McMenemy. All children are now deceased."

Jeanne McMenemy provides the following snippet:

My father, Richard Alexander McMenemy, died in 1990, (born 1912, in St. Paul Minnesota) and he was the last of eight siblings, many of whom have been gone for years. His only sister, Blanche, died in the influenza epidemic of 1918, in her 20's. His brothers were Robert, Sidney, Hugh, Edward, and two more whose names I can't remember---one of them died in childhood.

His father's name was Robert. He was Canadian, and that's all I know about him, except that perhaps he was a bigamist. My father, very late in his life, when he was already in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease, told me a story about his father, which I don't know the accuracy of: he said that he had a memory from when he was very young of a woman from Canada coming to the door of his families house in St. Paul, and claiming to be his father's wife! She had some children, (my father didn't remember how many), and had somehow found Robert, who had walked out on his Canadian family, come to Minnesota and started a new family. My father didn't remember any more about the story, and by the time he told it to me, all but one of his siblings were gone (and the family was not communicative anyway) and I have never tried to verify it with my surviving cousins.

My father worked for Northern Pacific Railroad for 20 years, but left Minnesota, with his wife Rose (Ladin) after he returned from his WWII service, and moved the Pacific Northwest. He graduated from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, and moved to Portland, Oregon, where he lived the rest of his life. He was a teacher, a remedial reading specialist, and an administrator in the Portland Public Schools. In his retirement he opened and antiques shop which he operated for 10 years, until the Alzheimer's disease forced another retirement.

I was born in January, 1949, and my sister, Meredith, in July of 1952. I live in Walla Walla, Washington and work as an artist and graphic designer.

Jeanne adds:

My dad's first teaching job in Portland, Oregon, when he arrived there in 1951, was at Kennedy Elementary School (not named for JFK, of course), which is the site of the newest McMenamin's lodging and restaurant complex.

Samuel was a weaver and it would seem that he and Martha are my great-great grandparents.

Robert, one of their sons, and my great grandfather and a labourer in an iron works, married Agnes Clark in Glasgow on 2nd September at the High Church in the Milton District of Glasgow in 1870.

A son Thomas, my grandfather was born on 20th December 1870, his birth was registered by his father, and signed by his X mark on 6th January 1871. They had, other children at this time unidentified, and Thomas, iron dresser married Elizabeth Lamb in Glasgow on 22nd January 1893. They had the following children in age order:- Thomas, John, daughter who went to America, William (my father), Isobel, Robert, Felix and Danny.

The spelling of our name was consistently that of McMenemy until the birth of my father who was registered as McMenemy, but later family births , including my own and those of my children have been spelt, McMenamay - the reason for this remained shrouded in the mists of history. It seems to me not improbable, that my great-great grandfather Samuel and James of a similar time could be related.

James McMenemy offers the following fragment, accompanied by the the background:

William McMenemy and Helen (Nellie ) Buchanan were my grandparents. To the best of my knowledge my great grandparents came from Donegal moving to the Stirling area of Scotland in the 1800s following on from the potato famine. I believe they eventually settled in Cambuslang were my great grand father worked in the mines as did my grandfather William. I don't know exactly which year my grandfather was born but know his birthday was on the 12th July which he hated due to the King Billy 1690 links of the battle of the Boyne.

Chris McMenamy has provided the following fragment relating to his family:

A few McMenamy's from Easton, MA fought in WWII.  I think they were all drafted.   James (my grandfather) and John both went to Europe.  James was in Ireland before he was shipped over to Normandy beach on the "Exchequer" boat.  This was D-day + two or three weeks.  He spent more than a year in Europe fighting all over the country.  In fact, he was involved in the Battle of the Bulge.  He also saw much of the destruction in Germany.

During his time in Europe, his wife sent him a Dear John letter (I have no respect for any woman who sent a Dear John letter).  Nonetheless, he was devastated.

His brother John was a cook I believe and was wounded when his jeep was nearly hit by a hand grenade.  He received shrapnel in the back.  After his being wounded, my grandfather was taken out of combat to become a cook as well.

After all of this and Germany's surrender, James was on his way (as well as most of the infantry) to fight in the pacific. Fortunately, troop movement was slow back then, and Japan had already been bombed and surrendered by the time he got back to the states.

When James returned, it was the first time he'd seen his family including his brother in more than a two years.  He met my grandmother in the late 1940s and they had my uncle James, Kevin (my father), and my Uncle Shaun.

My Grandfather, Robert McMenemy, b; 1840 Glasgow, Scotland came to the USA just prior to the Civil War abt; 1860, with a brother, name unknown. His brother remained up North while he came South to Louisiana. He was inducted into the Confederate Army and fought with the 25th Infantry Brigade.

As you may know, children were often named after their parent's brothers and sisters in those days. My father, Robert Emil James McMenemy was the first born. His father was Robert. His Grandfather on his mothers side was Emil. Possibly his father's father was James. This would indicate my Great Grandfather was James McMenemy from Glasgow, Scotland. A long shot and I'm sure that James McMenemy was a common name in Scotland. I have no other documentation on my Grandfather's relatives in Scotland. I might add that his other sons were named Albert Edward, Fred, Harry Luke and Edward Lee McMenemy.

Notes:

  1. A census entry for Hopewell, in Mercer County records Jon as John McOneman
  2. John had two sisters, Hannah and Margaret
  3. Alice was born in Dunhill, Waterford. She had family in the USA and Australia

The information which I have is from immigration papers and birth and death certificates.

John McMenamin born abt 1833 in what sounds like 'Karman' in Co. Tyrone. Father James (still living in 1864 - place given again as Karman) - Mother Margaret, deceased.

The next part of this story I have taken from his death certificate but cannot yet substantiate any of it. John travelled to the US at some stage, I presume either alone or maybe with his future wife. Did he have family in the US?

He married Alice Hazard (Hasard) born abt 1834 - in Philadelphia abt 1857 . The next part of the story is from immigration records Their first two children; Mary Ellen 1860 and James 1862 were born in 'Ople, Co. Mesa', New Jersey. The family then returned to Tyrone where their third child, William John was born in 1863/4.

They arrived in Australia aboard the "Queen of the East" (departing from Plymouth) in April 1864. John had a sponsor living in Sydney, an uncle whose surname was written as Kittens! He also had a sister living with said uncle, her name was Hannah.

FACTS

  • John's name on immigration papers was written as McMinnamin. - how did we get back to the original spelling?
  • On board the 'Queen of the East' there was a Margaret McMinnamin aged 12 native of 'Karman' Co. Tyrone - was she related?
  • John's wife Alice gave her native place as being 'Dunhill', Co. Waterford. Parents James and Mary both deceased.
  • On John's death certificate his son and my g.grandfather, Thomas Cyril McMenamin (born abt 1866), gave John's parents' names as Hugh McMenamin and Mary McQuade!!
  • John and his family settled in Warkworth, part of what was the St. Patrick's Plains Shire (now called Singleton) in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales. Other children of the marriage were: Margaret Ena 1871; Hannah abt 1873; Francis 1875; Lillian 1878;
  • Alice died September 1916, and John in October 1918.

Notes for JOHN FREDERICK WILSON:
Jack was an Inustrial Chemist & during the war years worked as a fabric dyer dyeing mainly military uniforms.

After the war Jack went into business at Maxart Pty Ltd with his brother Max who had established the company to supply his mother's Block Arcade business called Rosebud Beading with sequins & beads just after WW2.

The company then diversified into the manufacture & importing of buttons & Jack was successful in developing the business further dyeing buttons to the latest fashion colours required by clothing manufacturers & home dressmakers.

Max then developed the packaging of buttons in Tubes which better satisfied the display needs of button retailers in haberdashery departments. The idea was quickly adopted & is today the preferred button display method all around the world.

Later his 3 sons joined the business & developed it further.

Maxart Plastics Pty Ltd injection moulding was formed with Frank Lenthall to manufacture Nylon & ABS Plated buttons & later with Ron Wilson started manufacturing garment hangers & garment size colour coded garment sizing devices. The business grew rapidly & was later sold to Spotless Group Ltd & Ron was appointed Spotless Plastics Pty Ltd's Marketing Director & over a period of 11 years was successful in introducing the size colour coded garment hanger concept that he had developed to Target USA & most major Australian Discount stores. Ron also arranged manufacture of his products throughout S.E. Asia to allow garments to be packaged with them & sent on to Australia & the USA for various major retailers.

Brian diversified the company further into jute & other womens belts then introduced a highly successful range of jewellery quality buttons imported from overseas.

After Ron left Spotless he bought out the Maxart companies from the family.

Maxart stopped trading some years after garment import tariff protection was removed in Australia when most of the clothing industry moved off shore to manufacture garments & cheap imported clothing stopped most people making their own clothes & subsequently the demand for buttons declined dramatically.

Jacks interests included Orchid growing, Bowls, Vic Football ( Melbourne team) & Fishing.

Supported the Salvation army & Maroochydore S.L.S.C.

Funeral service was conducted by Capt Neil Clanfield 23rd Sept 1992 at Gregson & Weight Chapel Maroochydore.

I am Jennifer McMenemy, I’m 27 years old and live in Glasgow, Scotland, UK. I decided to look up our family name and came across your website.

My dad is William McMenemy and his grandad originally came from Ireland I’m not sure of dates etc, his name was Duncan McMenemy. I don’t really know what else to write but I do like meeting people with the same name and like to know a bit of history about the origin of our name etc.

F43/Jeri Johnson, Astoria Oregon

I have received an email:

I have just begun to trace family history.  I get as far as Peter John Sylvester McManamna (b about 1848) who was married to Mahala "Ellen" Butler in Millersburg Iowa (1868) where they lived & began having children.  These are some, possibly all his children:

  • McManamna Andrew M. 21 OCT 1884  iowa united states
  • McManamna Elizabeth  1896  missouri united states
  • McManamna Gerald  14 FEB 1890  parnell iowa iowa united
  • McManamna James ABT 1878  iowa united states
  • McManamna Katherine 1893  iowa united states
  • McManamna Martin 1887  iowa united states.

They later went to Missouri and then many moved out West to Astoria Oregon area.  Fm Astoria, some branches went to Seattle and other Washington towns.

I seem to hit a brick wall before Iowa as far as documents.  But my GGrandfather Andrew was extremely intelligent, articulate and classy, and he had lots of family history to tell - and in great detail.  I remember his stories, having grown up here in Astoria Oregon near him.  His wife lived until the age of 96 and we were very close.  My brother still lives in his house, and His grandson, my father, spent many hours talking with him about family history - this grandpa practically raised him as his parents divorced early in his life.

These are some of the oldest family stories passed to us orally, let's see if they fit any one else's:

  • PJSMcManamna's family came to Iowa from "Upstate New York".
  • The family's immigration to the US predates the famines in Ireland.
  • In Ireland (although we have some Scottish blood), The McMan..s were in a blood feud with the family of James O'Donahue fm Northern Ireland (Protestants).
  • This feud was over McManamna horses. It went to court and the two family groups moved away from each other, The O'dons migrated to Cork and the McMac group moved inland
  • but the McMans (Catholics) & the FitzPatricks, FitzGeralds and Fitzhues (family connections) continued to fight with the O'Donahues by whatever means they could
  • The first McMans that came from Ireland were direct decendents of the last King of Tera or Tora.  The Fitz families above were decendents of his bastard children, Was there a King of Tera or Tora that anyone knows about?
  • GGGrandmother? involved in court battle from N Ireland was supposed to have been a 6 ft tall red headed woman.  Her husband (a jockey of his own famous race horse) was only 5'6.  She scalped James "Odonahue" from back of his head to the front of his head by means of cocking him with bridle of the horse he stole.
  • After O'dons & McMans both immigrated to US, she later scalped the same "Odonahue" again.  She cocked him on the head pushing back his scalp from the front to the back.  Both families laughed so hard about him getting scalped twice by the same woman that they made peace.
  • The flight of the McMans and Fitz's clans to the Americas is a separate story.  It involved the clan's salvage rights to a sunken ship.  As they were bringing the booty to shore, a Protestant Captain of a Coast Guard Ship "gave them 5 pounds and took the booty".  The angry McMacs & Fitz's planned a counter attack and their escape to the Colonies.  They took out long boats, set fire to the CG Ship, killed all hands and sunk it. They then paddled the long boats out to reach ships that were heading to the Americas where they signed on as able bodied seamen. (Later their wives and children joined them).  This is the reason why there are not many McManamas left in Ireland.
  • My dad travelled to Ireland about 5 years ago where he met a "McMan.." on the plane who was visiting from Australia.  He said this lady corroborated his grandpa's version of the story of events of the feud in Ireland

Since Ireland stuff:

  • McMan clan settled in the upstate NY area before/during revolutionary war
  • We have Seneca blood through the English army General Butler's bastard children
  • This Seneca woman is in John Brown the abolitionist's line
  • We are relatives of a group called the "Dirty Girtys" from the earliest days (has anyone ever heard of the "dirty girtys?
  • My GG grandmother was the daughter of John Brown the abolitionist. She was in hiding due to threats on her life.
  • Many of the "Brown cousins" were in hiding and their children did not know their true heritage.
  • The McManamna's in Iowa made frequent trips to Missouri McManamna's and vice a versa as a cover for slave raids.  (The family was supposedly very much against slavery and used clandestine means to fight it, and financially supported anti-slavery groups).

Much of this seems far fetched, but there is so much detail, and many small parts of the more recent history can be confirmed.  When I found the Butler last name and Indian connection in the word Mahala, it might lend credence to the General Butler story I heard so many times.

I also know that My GGranfather made a trip back east in early 1900's (late 1800's) to talk relatives from Iowa and Missouri into moving here to Astoria Oregon.  He met up with his parents and siblings in Missouri and brought them back to Oregon by way of N. California in order to visit with theirJohn Brown relatives.  I also recently found out that yes, the Brown's did live in N California, and recent obituaries I found put these relatives here in Oregon about 1905.

While I can objectively look at some of the events and physical evidence back to Iowa, and say these stories could be true, I have NO evidence from before 1868, I don't know the history of Ireland, I'm not sure if a general Butler ever existed or if any of my McManamna grandfather's stories could possibly be true.  I have ascertained for sure that Peter John Sylvester McManamna's wife, was called "Mahala" Ellen Butler during her wedding ceremony in 1868 and that Mahala is an indian word for woman.

It is fun to talk about.  Let me know if any of this early stuff fits with yours

Why Emigration not Immigration? Well, we interested in the diaspora, and how it has been created from the original homelands... rather than how any one particular area of the world has been populated with our family.
